Job Role

Role Overview:

The Activism and Human Rights Education (HRE) Officer at Amnesty International Thailand (AITH) is responsible for creating and disseminating educational materials related to the organization's campaigns. This role involves conducting workshops and training to enhance activist skills and support public campaigns, thereby increasing engagement and participation. Additionally, the Activism and HRE Officer develops public relations strategies, coordinates regional and global events, and maintains an activist database.

The Activism and HRE Officer also develops and implements human rights education curricula for schools and communities, manages online content, and collaborates with educational institutions to broaden HRE outreach. This role includes evaluating and reporting on project progress, coordinating with Amnesty International (AI) for HRE initiatives, and aiding in strategic planning for human rights education and activism. Supervising interns and volunteers to ensure effective human rights awareness and activism is also an aspect of this position.

 

Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

Activism (45%)

Key Activities

  • Assist with development and lead in execution of work programme based on Activism, Youth and Children Strategy and Amnesty’s Thailand strategy
  • Monitoring and assess human rights situation, especially in activity and community-based actions in order to provide an input in planning, and execution of the Amnesty Campaign as a whole.
  • With the team, lead in community organisation and mobilisation by working with colleagues across departments to manage, implement, monitor and evaluate political activism training and effectiveness programme. Support Amnesty's public campaigns, enabling groups, members, and stakeholders to actively participate.
  • Assist in develop of activism, youth, and children strategy which align with global movement’s strategies, and Amnesty Thailand strategy.
  • Build and develop relationships with Amnesty Thailand activists to ensure collaborative working, and to support the identification of local political opportunities for human rights change.
  • Develop information, content, and courses related to Amnesty Thailand’s campaign activities.
  • Contact, coordinate, plan, and support events with Amnesty activism regionally and globally.
  • Develop and maintain the functionality of online activities to enhance outreach and engagement.
  • Maintain and update a database of activists and collaborate with other departments.
  • Prepare progress and results reports.

Human Rights Education (45%)

Key Activities

  • Assist with development and lead in execution of work programme based on human rights education strategy and Amnesty’s Thailand strategy.
  • Monitoring and assess human rights situation, especially human rights education context in order to provide an input in planning, and execution of the Amnesty Campaign as a whole.
  • With the team, develop curricula, information, tools, and activities for human rights education both in schools and the community.
  • Organize human rights education training/session/classrooms according to established plans.
  • Coordinate with educational institutions for MOUs and expand human rights education classrooms.
  • Develop, support, and publicize initiatives to encourage learning about human rights issues through the human rights classroom.
  • Update the content on the online learning system for human rights education.
  • Evaluate and report on the progress of the project.
  • Contact and coordinate with Amnesty in other countries and the Head Office for planning, developing, organizing, and evaluating human rights education work.
  • Support the development of a strategic plan for human rights education at the country, regional, and global levels.
  • Manage databases, reports, and related documents related to learners.

Person Specification

Education & certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education, International Relations, Social Justice, or a relevant field.

Essential experience

  • Two years of experience in youth activism for social justice.

Essential knowledge

  • Advanced, up-to-date knowledge of human rights issues relevant to Amnesty's campaigns.
  • Knowledge of persuasive communication strategies for public relations activities.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development for human rights education such as an understanding of participatory and interactive teaching methods.

Essential skills and abilities

  • Project management skill.
  • Workshop facilitation and classroom management skill.
  • Skill in promoting critical thinking, analysis, and reflection on human rights issues.
  • Advocacy skill.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs such as Excel and Word.
  • Strong communication skills to persuade groups, members, and the public.
  • Have a strong proficiency of the Thai language (verbal and written).
  • Have a working proficiency of the English language (verbal and written).
  • Ability to coordinate, support, and train groups for the implementation of human rights activities.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and support events at both regional and global levels.
