Job Role

Role Overview:

The Activism Officer at Amnesty International Thailand (AITH) is responsible for organizing and mobilizing human rights action for social change. This role involves leading workshops and trainings to enhance activist skills and support public campaigns, thereby increasing engagement and participation. Additionally, the Activism Officer leads develops public relations strategies, coordinates national and global level events, and maintains an activist database.

The Activism Officer design activism strategy, activism pathway and coordinates with various departments in order to achieve campaign goals. In addition, the strategy will focus on maintaining activists and creating a stronger human rights movement from the ground base. This role also includes monitoring and assessing human rights movement in order to strengthen People Power.

Research, planning, and Developing Strategy

Key Activities

  • Develop Activism, Youth and Children Strategy which based on People Power Approach
  • Providing input and feedback from activists, Youth, Children, and community perspective in order to develop Amnesty's Thailand strategy, and global strategy
  • Monitoring and assess human rights situation, especially in activity and actions in order to provide an input in planning, and execution of the Amnesty Campaign as a whole.
  • Plan projects and activity which align with overall Amnesty Thailand's strategy.
  • Lead in community organisation and mobilisation by working with colleagues across departments to manage, implement, monitor and evaluate political activism training and effectiveness programme. Support Amnesty's public campaigns, enabling groups, members, and stakeholders to actively participate.

  • Develop retention and capacity building programme to support individuals, community/group for organisation and mobilisation.
  • Lead in action taking by Amnesty activists and community. Contact, coordinate, plan, and support events with Amnesty activism regionally and globally.
  • Develop and maintain the functionality of online activities to enhance outreach and engagement.
  • Develop information, content related to Amnesty Thailand's campaign activities for action taking.
  • Build and develop relationship with Amnesty Thailand activists to ensure collaborative working, and to support identification of local political opportunity for human rights change for people power approach.
  • Create or/and take part in a network of activism community in Thailand in order to and support activists and community with Amnesty Thailand's mandates scope.
  • Maintain and update a database of activists and collaborate with other departments.
  • Ensure that office volunteers contribute are well support and able to contribute effectively to the work of Amnesty Thailand
  • Take part with the team to prepare progress and results reports and plans for domestic activism.

  • Support the sharing of experiences, resources, good practices, and the development of peer-to-peer mentoring and support on activism within the movement.
  • Build and foster leadership, focusing on children and youth, and marginalised community, to create a collective/ feminist leadership.
  • Encourage young people and community to take part in decision making and leadership both within Amnesty Thailand or global movement, and larger human rights impact. Taking part in shaping friendly space for governance from various background
  • Creating inclusive space for learning and taking part e.g. language support, information support, training and coaching.

Person Specification

Education & certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, International Relations, Social Justice, or a relevant field.

Essential experience

  • Two years of experience in youth activism for social justice.

Essential knowledge

  • Advanced, up-to-date knowledge of human rights issues relevant to Amnesty's campaigns.
  • Knowledge of persuasive communication strategies for public relations activities.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development for human rights education such as an understanding of participatory and interactive teaching methods.

Essential skills and abilities

  • Project management skill.
  • Workshop facilitation and classroom management skill.
  • Skill in promoting critical thinking, analysis, and reflection on human rights issues.
  • Advocacy skill.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs such as Excel and Word.
  • Strong communication skills to persuade groups, members, and the public.
  • Have a strong proficiency of the Thai language (verbal and written).
  • Have a working proficiency of the English language (verbal and written).
  • Ability to coordinate, support, and train groups for the implementation of human rights activities.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and support events at both regional and global levels.

Personal attributes and qualities

  • Self-responsibility and self-initiative.
  • Be able to respond to flexible work schedules and fast-paced work environments.
  • Be able to travel to occasionally work in other provinces on a short trip.
  • Having empathy and sensitivity towards activists and learners.
