Following the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is once again under the global spotlight.

Amnesty warns that most options to remove carbon that has already been emitted will also likely violate human rights

Amnesty International writes to respectfully request that the Royal Thai Government ensures that its current immigration enforcement “Operation X-Ray Outlaw Foreigner” upholds and safeguards the human rights of migrants, refugees and people seeking international protection from persecution, in compliance with Thailand’s international human rights obligations. Amnesty International welcomes in this regard the release on 2 November 2018 of an estimated 100 children from detention in Suan Phlu Immigration Detention Centre, Bangkok. The organization continues to call on the government to address the ongoing absence of adequate procedural and legal guarantees for refugees and asylum-seekers, which exposes them to a range of human rights violations, including in the context of immigration enforcement.

Responding to the news that a court in Cambodia has convicted the “ADHOC Five” peaceful activists of “bribery” and given them suspended five-year prison sentences, Minar Pimple, Senior Director of Global Operations from Amnesty International, said:

Chinese human rights defenders YANG Chong and WU Yuhua, UNHCR-recognized refugees, have been charged with immigration offences in Thailand. They could be deported to China, where they would face risks of unfair trial and torture.

Amnesty International’s Senior Director of Global Operations, Minar Pimple, has been refused an entry visa to speak at this week’s World Economic Forum on ASEAN event in Hanoi, further evidence of the Vietnamese government’s ongoing crackdown against freedom of expression.

Ghana has lost one of its finest sons, Africa has lost a giant, and the world has lost a moral compass. This is a time of grieving not only for those who knew him well, but for countless people across the world whose lives were touched by the life he so exceptionally led. As a fellow African and a leader working for peace and justice, I count myself privileged to be among their number.
