Responding to the closure of Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily following the freezing of its assets by national security police and the arrest of managers and staff on charges of “endangering national security”, Amnesty International’s Asia-Pacific Regional Director Yamini Mishra said:

June 20 is World Refugee Day. On this day, Amnesty International Thailand stands in solidarity with those who have fled their homes seeking safety, and urges the Thai government to protect the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.

As a fairly new student organization in our considerably new Secondary School (only 5 years young), and the first club at that, we are navigating in uncharted waters and our members and officers couldn’t be more proud being a part of this student organization. This club has opened a lot of doors toward learning, opportunities, and networks for us. Over the past year and a half, our club has done its utmost to facilitate as many activities as we possibly could whilst operating under the limitations brought by the pandemic and in between academic responsibilities. 

Amnesty International Thailand has submitted an open letter to the Ministry of Justice demanding prompt actions to prosecute and to revise the law in compliance with international standards to end torture and enforced disappearances. The Thai authorities are also urged to launch a formal investigation into the enforced disappearance of Wanchalearm Satsaksit, a Thai activist who was last seen in Cambodia’s Phnom Penh since there has been no progress in the Cambodian investigation. An activity will be held to mark the anniversary “One Year, We shall not forget #OneYearJusticeBeRestoredForWanchalearm “.  

The Cambodian authorities have failed in their legal obligation to properly investigate the enforced disappearance of Thai dissident Wanchalearm Satsaksit, said Amnesty International today, one year after he was last seen in Phnom Penh. 

The Myanmar military authorities should immediately drop charges against journalists, said Amnesty International today. This includes those in pre-trial detention, on bail, or those with warrants outstanding on them solely for carrying out their work and the peaceful exercise of their human rights.

Since the first wave of Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Thailand has still been ruled under the State of Emergency across the country. Powers have been centralized and executed arbitrarily to curb the spread of Covid-19 infection. Some rights and freedoms have been deprived to ensure survival and to prevent the pandemic. Nevertheless, such restrictions have to be made proportionately, necessarily and based on reasonable and acceptable ground. In addition, it must be equally and reasonably imposed for a definite period of time.

Israeli forces have displayed a shocking disregard for the lives of Palestinian civilians by carrying out a number of airstrikes targeting residential buildings in some cases killing entire families – including children – and causing wanton destruction to civilian property, in attacks that may amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity, said Amnesty International today. 

The May 18 Memorial Foundation has organized a ceremony to confer the 2021 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights to Mr. Anon Nampha on 18 May and has invited him to join them via zoom.  But since Mr. Anon is still receiving treatment for Covid-19 he caught while incarcerated in prison and is now hospitalized at Thammasat Hospital and since the court has denied him bail, he is unable to participate in this ceremony.
