{"id":6556,"date":"2026-01-12T17:22:01","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T10:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/?p=6556"},"modified":"2026-04-22T14:51:49","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T07:51:49","slug":"stories-of-hope-and-humanity-to-end-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/success\/2026\/01\/stories-of-hope-and-humanity-to-end-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Stories of hope and humanity to end the year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Despite the stark challenges currently facing humanity,&nbsp;Amnesty International&nbsp;continues to witness how people from&nbsp;all over the world are demonstrating&nbsp;the&nbsp;importance of activism and the life-changing power of solidarity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>From holding governments to account and pursuing justice for survivors of gender-based violence, to freeing human rights defenders, here are some inspiring stories of hope and humanity from the past six months to take you into the new year.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-july\"><strong>July<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-global\"><strong>Global<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two landmark Advisory Opinions this year significantly contributed to clarifying the states\u2019 human rights obligations in the face of the climate emergency, bolstering the fight for climate justice and accountability. In July, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amnesty.org%2Fen%2Flatest%2Fnews%2F2025%2F07%2Fglobal-international-court-of-justices-landmark-opinion-bolsters-fight-for-climate-justice-and-accountability%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cangela.singh%40amnesty.org%7C5873c3969b77434df3d708de328623e2%7Cc2dbf829378d44c1b47a1c043924ddf3%7C0%7C0%7C639003748866139537%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=anGLPB554Nv0dw%2FAYMqmi3Sx34B28RoeVEK6GfLYFQY%3D&amp;reserved=0\">International Court of Justice<\/a>\u2019s (ICJ) made clear that the full enjoyment of human rights cannot be ensured without protection of the climate system and other parts of the environment. The world\u2019s highest court stressed that states have a duty to act now, including to regulate the activities of private actors, and cooperate to protect current and future generations and ecosystems from the worsening impacts of human induced climate change. Andrea, Pamela, and Roxana were killed in the attack, while Sof\u00eda survived.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-senegal\"><strong>Senegal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Following calls from Amnesty International, the Minister of Justice requested the General Prosecutor open an investigation into \u201cpolitical violence\u201d that had taken place in Senegal from 2021 to 2024. Over that period, Amnesty International conducted research and denounced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amnesty.org%2Ffr%2Flatest%2Fpress-release%2F2023%2F06%2Fsenegal-amnesty-international-demande-une-enquete-independante-sur-la-repression-meurtriere-lors-des-manifestations%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Celise.cannuel%40amnesty.org%7Cf8aba7ce9c6d47c09ed108de2684c994%7Cc2dbf829378d44c1b47a1c043924ddf3%7C0%7C0%7C638990548908486355%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=zOabIlI7uU1lxtCfhx8NjFZ8Lwmv1jW3vJoNCXenkCE%3D&amp;reserved=0\">the killings of at least 65 people<\/a>&nbsp;during demonstrations and the arbitrary detention of hundreds of people&nbsp;ahead of the 2024 presidential elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-slovenia\"><strong>Slovenia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On 31 July,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/slovenia-bans-weapons-sales-israel-eu-palestine-gaza-humanitarian-crisis\/\">Slovenia banned all arms trade with Israel<\/a>, including imports, exports, and transit, becoming the first EU member state to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A week later, on 6 August, the Slovenian government also banned the import of goods from Israel that originate from illegal Israeli settlements in the OPT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International Slovenia, together with other non-governmental organizations and support from civil society, had long urged the government to adopt these measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-august\"><strong>August<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-israel-and-the-occupied-palestinian-territory\">Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On 24 July, an Israeli court lifted the travel ban on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde15\/7856\/2024\/en\/\">Ahmad Khalefa<\/a>, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, allowing him to accept an invitation from Amnesty International to travel to Italy with his family. He is pictured here with his family.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ban was imposed on Ahmad, as part of the conditions of his release in February 2024, after he was detained for almost four months for chanting slogans during a protest against the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After returning from Italy, Ahmad thanked Amnesty International: \u201cThis trip meant the world to me and my family \u2013 we truly appreciate it. It was incredibly meaningful to feel the care and effort that went into organizing this trip and it gave us the opportunity to breathe and enjoy quality time together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-syria\"><strong>Syria<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, Syrian asylum seeker&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/eur44\/0229\/2025\/en\/\">Ahmad Aabo<\/a>&nbsp;had his temporary protection revoked while he was living in T\u00fcrkiye, due to an HIV diagnosis. On 26 August 2025, he had his status restored following calls from Amnesty International. His social security was reactivated, restoring his access to free healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-plain has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"text-transform:none\">\n<p>Amnesty\u2019s urgent action appeal helped me breathe again. I want to send my sincere gratitude to everyone.<\/p>\n<cite>Syrian asylum seeker Ahmad Aabo<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe urgent action appeal helped me breathe again. I want to send my sincere gratitude to everyone. Simply because of my HIV+ status, I endured persecution, I was detained. I feared being detained every time I saw a police officer,\u201d said Ahmad Aabo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow I have my ID card again, I have regained my rights. This is the impact of the urgent action. Thanking you is not enough. I wish that no one goes through what I have been through. People living with HIV should be supported. They should not endure torture. I thank all those who signed appeals for me, all those who stood by me from the bottom of my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-turkiye\"><strong>T\u00fcrkiye<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International launched an urgent action that helped secure the release of three activists \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/eur44\/0205\/2025\/en\/\">Hivda Selen, Sinem \u00c7elebi, and Do\u011fan Nur<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 who were arbitrarily detained on 29 June, the day of the Istanbul LGBTI+ Pride march, and remanded in pre-trial detention on baseless charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do\u011fan Nur was released on 30 July after his lawyer\u2019s appeal. On 8 August, Sinem \u00c7elebi and Hivda Selen were released at their first hearing in a trial involving 53 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ever-expanding patterns of repression and intimidation, coupled with detentions, have become a form of punishment in T\u00fcrkiye. In such a climate, it is more vital than ever that we build social solidarity and speak out against the increasing unlawfulness,\u201d said Do\u011fan Nur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the urgent action that Amnesty International launched on our behalf, many people have heard about it and joined the quest for justice to ensure this unlawful detention ends. I would like to thank Amnesty International and its supporters for their contribution to this process. Solidarity keeps us going!\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-september\"><strong>September<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-egypt\"><strong>Egypt<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Alaa Abdel Fattah is an Egyptian-British activist, writer, and software developer. He rose to prominence during the 2011 Egyptian revolution and has been repeatedly targeted by Egyptian authorities for his peaceful activism and criticism of the government.&nbsp;His most recent arrest was on 29 September 2019, amidst a widespread crackdown on protests. In December 2021, he was sentenced to five years in prison by an Emergency State Security Court on spurious charges of \u201cspreading false news,\u201d related to a social media post. Prisoner of conscience Alaa Abdel Fattah granted presidential pardon after six years of unjust imprisonment.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/09\/egypt-prisoner-of-conscience-alaa-abdel-fattah-granted-presidential-pardon-after-six-years-of-unjust-imprisonment\/\">Amnesty International and Amnesty UK<\/a>&nbsp;have extensively campaigned for his release for years. He was finally granted presidential pardon and released in September 2025. His release would have never happened without the tireless campaigning and pressure by his mother Laila Souif and his sisters Mona and Sanaa Saif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-turkiye-0\"><strong>T\u00fcrkiye<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tens of thousands of appeals sent by Amnesty activists helped secure the release from pre-trial detention of human rights defender and LGBTI+ activist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/eur44\/0305\/2025\/en\/\">Enes Hocao\u011fullar\u0131<\/a>, who was imprisoned after he criticized the crackdown on mass protests following the detention and imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu during a speech at the Council of Europe in March 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he returned to T\u00fcrkiye on 5 August, he was taken into police custody and remanded to pre-trial detention the same day. On 8 September, he was released at the first hearing, after Amnesty International issued an urgent action on his behalf. Since leaving Afghanistan, the team had continued to campaign for their right to play and to represent their country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, FIFA organized a tournament in Morocco so the team could play its first international matches against Chad, Tunisia and Libya. The team were renamed Afghan Women United.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/blogs\/campaigns-blog\/playing-fun-building-movement-khalida-popal-football-platform-womens-rights\">Khalida Popal<\/a>, founder and former captain of the team, \u201cWe have been fighting for so long, it\u2019s kind of tiring, it\u2019s too much. But at the end of the day, when you see the players returning back on the pitch, you get this feeling that it\u2019s all worth it. It was all worth it to see this young generation of women representing our country. It was quite emotional for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-november\"><strong>November<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-greece\"><strong>Greece<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Following an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AmnestyEU\/status\/1986482882110492736\">Amnesty International campaign<\/a>, the head of the Greek coastguard, along with three executives, were charged for their role in the Pylos shipwreck, in which over 600 people died. This followed the charges brought against 17 officers in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eswatini\"><strong>Eswatini<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Eswatini Member of Parliament (MP) Mthandeni Dube&nbsp;and an Amnesty&nbsp;prisoner of conscience&nbsp;was released from prison in November, after more than three years behind bars on politically motivated charges. These charges were linked to his calls for democratic reform. His release comes in a context of severe repression. Although it is not the end of the struggle for justice, it is an important and hard-won step forward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-argentina-0\"><strong>Argentina<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Progress was made in the fight for justice for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amnistia.org.ar\/noticias\/diez-policias-bonaerenses-detenidos-y-procesados-por-el-travesticidio-de-sofia-fernandez\">Sof\u00eda Fern\u00e1ndez, a 39-year-old trans woman who died in police custody<\/a>&nbsp;in April 2023, in Pilar, Buenos Aires province, two days after being arrested by local police. Two weeks later, the Public Prosector posted on Facebook announcing either opening&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/attorneygeneral.ly\/posts\/pfbid036Qt5tDfHgPgySX6di6pWV6ZvRN2FzizzQEXXossp6eYg4F59AUFo91ztPSFxz85Ql\">investigations<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/attorneygeneral.ly\/posts\/pfbid0FsfVR517buwvZ8YSCyBpcBXYSakn1tPqSDB1TvnLvEn1QtRqzC2XDhcML6BFRZ81l\">referring<\/a>&nbsp;defendants to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/attorneygeneral.ly\/posts\/pfbid0gtX8YH1w9oaj1anXLhw1BpENhaVav37k2n5V6B4G11SnbiHABVjw59BjHVLDxPzSl\">trial<\/a>&nbsp;in connection with the killings of Tebu men. The aim of the action plan is to strengthen the core structures of the rule of law and promote the realization of human rights in Finland. This comes after ongoing advocacy from Amnesty International Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-malaysia\"><strong>Malaysia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a landmark case, the wife of a Malaysian pastor who was forcibly disappeared eight years ago won a lawsuit against the police and the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-39252139\"><strong>Raymond Koh was pulled out of his car<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;by masked men in a suburb of the capital Kuala Lumpur in 2017. His whereabouts remain unknown and his family has long maintained he was taken by police. Amnesty has called for accountability in the case for years, in support of families and lawyers pushing for justice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in November the high court ruled he had been forcibly disappeared, with the judge holding the government and police responsible for his abduction, in Malaysia\u2019s first such judgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-guinea\"><strong>Guinea<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Workers linked to the state-owned Guinean Oil Palm and Rubber Tree Company (Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Guin\u00e9enne de Palmiers \u00e0 huile et d\u2019H\u00e9v\u00e9as \u2013 Soguipah) were awarded a fixed and structured payment schedule, thanks to calls from Amnesty International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, Amnesty International launched a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/afr29\/0365\/2025\/en\/\">report<\/a>&nbsp;revealing how workers\u2019 rights were being abused in plantations linked to Soguipah.
