{"id":2354,"date":"2023-07-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/six-months-of-human-rights-successes\/"},"modified":"2024-11-11T15:44:54","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T08:44:54","slug":"six-months-of-human-rights-successes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/blog\/2023\/07\/six-months-of-human-rights-successes\/","title":{"rendered":"Six months of human rights successes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Saving lives, changing laws and protecting human rights \u2013 Amnesty International and its supporters have been busy racking up the wins this year\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-changing-legislation\">CHANGING LEGISLATION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International USA has been working hard to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/issues\/gun-violence\/\">end gun violence<\/a>&nbsp;across the country. In Illinois and Michigan, Amnesty joined advocates to help pass several gun safety laws. Thanks to Amnesty\u2019s advocacy and campaigning work, Illinois is now the ninth state to ban assault weapons, and Michigan has established universal background checks for all firearm purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Australia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a campaign by activists and organizations including Amnesty,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amnesty.org.au%2Fprogress-the-act-is-raising-the-age-to-14%2F&amp;data=05%7C01%7Cangela.singh%40amnesty.org%7C425579797971466a101508db72218e25%7Cc2dbf829378d44c1b47a1c043924ddf3%7C0%7C0%7C638229260704730010%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=OyfOFFO3NW4BXJ0lFo91Kx5CjWbUmQCXCyLRJy6DzHQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\">the Australian Capital Territory&nbsp; tabled legislation to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12 years old, and eventually raise the age to 14 in July 2025.<\/a>&nbsp;However, children accused of \u2018series offences\u2019 will continue to be subject to police investigation including strip-searches, being dragged through courts, and locked in prisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EU<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On 26 May states adopted a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/05\/global-states-agree-landmark-treaty-to-help-deliver-justice-to-victims-of-genocide-crimes-against-humanity-and-war-crimes\/\">major treaty<\/a>,&nbsp;<em>The Ljubljana-The Hague Convention on international cooperation in the investigation and prosecution of the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and other international crimes<\/em>. Two legal advisers from Amnesty were present during the diplomatic conference raising concerns and making recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a major win for human rights and Amnesty International, which has been contributing to this treaty since its inception 10 years ago. Other Amnesty sections and other civil society organizations also worked tirelessly to secure governmental commitment to this crucial initiative. This is landmark moment in the fight for climate justice as it means the court will give a legal opinion on the obligations of governments to protect the human rights of present and future generations against the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DEATH PENALTY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Malaysia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.my\/2023\/03\/27\/abolition-of-the-mandatory-death-penalty\/\">positive move<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flom.agc.gov.my%2Fact-detail.php%3Flanguage%3DBI%26act%3D846&amp;data=05%7C01%7Cangela.singh%40amnesty.org%7C425579797971466a101508db72218e25%7Cc2dbf829378d44c1b47a1c043924ddf3%7C0%7C0%7C638229260704730010%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=TznTYjDE6nWp8tpNl5XhXAn6nxeTg25UpIpVM%2FZAtm4%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flom.agc.gov.my%2Fact-detail.php%3Flanguage%3DBI%26act%3D847&amp;data=05%7C01%7Cangela.singh%40amnesty.org%7C425579797971466a101508db72218e25%7Cc2dbf829378d44c1b47a1c043924ddf3%7C0%7C0%7C638229260704730010%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=PGHnAVLOVwR2ia%2FRFS5B9x2iKcEbDrdx7ejoY8LuRiE%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Revision of Sentence of Death and Imprisonment for Natural Life (Temporary Jurisdiction of The Federal Court) Act 2023<\/a>, were officially published in Malaysia\u2019s Federal Gazette on 16 June, with the former coming into effect on 4 July<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the Minister of Law announces a date for the law on re-sentencing to come into effect, people sentenced to death can apply for a review of their mandatory death sentence . In addition to repealing the mandatory death penalty and introducing sentencing discretion for all applicable offences, the death penalty has been abolished in full for seven offences. Amnesty International has been calling for an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/what-we-do\/death-penalty\/\">end to the death penalty<\/a>&nbsp;globally for over 45 years and these new bills are a significant step towards total abolition for Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LGBTI RIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Iran<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iranian activist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.au\/good-news-sareh-sedighi-hamadanis-death-sentence-overturned\/\">Zahra Sedighi-Hamadani<\/a>&nbsp;was sentenced to death in 2022 for supporting LGBTI rights. In another key move, the Taiwan government has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CsY3g5ktKjp\/\">permitted joint adoption for married same-sex couples<\/a>. The newly passed laws mean transgender, non-binary and gender diverse people will no longer be forced to undergo invasive \u201csex reassignment surgery\u201d before being able to correct their gender identity documents. This is incredible news for Amnesty Australia\u2019s Queensland LGBTQIA+ network who are working closely in partnership with other local organizations in the fight for LGBTI rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South Korea<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Seong-wook and his partner Kim Yong-min held a wedding ceremony in 2019 and live together as a married couple. The findings were shared with Google\u2019s Threat Analysis Group, which focuses on countering government-backed cyber-attacks, and Apple. Google along with other affected vendors, including Samsung, were able to release security updates protecting billions of Android, Chrome and Linux users from the exploit techniques used in this attack, while Apple also followed up with a security patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South Korea<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After nine years of court proceedings, South Korea\u2019s Supreme Court ruled that Google must disclose whether it provided personal information such as the email addresses of Korean human rights activists, including Amnesty International Korea, to US intelligence agencies. The ruling holds multinational corporations like Google accountable for the privacy rights of its users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>USA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The spyware crisis is causing major implications for the future of human rights, and Amnesty International has been calling for an immediate global ban on invasive spyware. March saw a significant win for the human rights movement, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/03\/27\/fact-sheet-president-biden-signs-executive-order-to-prohibit-u-s-government-use-of-commercial-spyware-that-poses-risks-to-national-security\/#:~:text=Today%2C%20President%20Biden%20signed%20an,rights%20abuses%20around%20the%20world.\">US President Biden signed an Executive Order<\/a>&nbsp;restricting the U.S. government\u2019s use of commercial spyware technology. Amnesty International moved quickly, issuing an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde13\/6390\/2023\/en\/\">urgent action<\/a>&nbsp;calling for the death sentence to be overturned. In May 2023, the Supreme Court quashed their convictions and overturned their death sentences. Later that month, Arshia\u2019s lawyer posted publicly on Twitter that he had been released from prison on bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Austria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kamran Ghaderi and Massud Mossaheb, two Austrian-Iranian citizens arbitrarily detained in Evin prison, were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/6\/2\/iran-releases-one-danish-and-two-austrian-citizens\">unconditionally released<\/a>&nbsp;on 2 June, and finally able to return home to their families in Vienna. They had both been convicted after unfair trials based on forced \u201cconfessions\u201d obtained by torture and other ill-treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot only did you help to make public the injustice that was done to me; you also gave me courage by letting me know how many compassionate and good people there are in this world,\u201d said Massud. \u201cPlease continue to stand up for others!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Angola<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/05\/angola-authorities-detaining-seriously-ill-activist-for-more-than-500-days-despite-a-judge-ordering-his-release\/\">Tanaice Neutro<\/a>, an Angolan activist who uses his music to protest, was arrested in January 2022. After he had been unjustly imprisoned for one year, Amnesty rallied support, raised awareness and started&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/AFR1266412023ENGLISH.pdf\">campaigning<\/a>&nbsp;on his behalf. I am grateful for all the support Amnesty has given me and my family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Venezuela<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlos Debiais, a Venezuelan photographer unfairly detained since 12 November 2021,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/amr53\/6863\/2023\/en\/\">was finally released<\/a>&nbsp;from prison on 6 June 2023, following a campaign from Amnesty International and its supporters. Venezuela\u2019s prison authorities had refused to comply with a release warrant issued in April 2022, extending his arbitrarily detention by an additional 14 months. Fortunately, I am now free,\u201d said Carlos. \u201cThank you to the entire Amnesty family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bangladesh<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bangladeshi journalist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/asa13\/6628\/2023\/en\/\">Shamsuzzaman Shams<\/a>&nbsp;was arrested in the early hours of 29 March &nbsp;after publishing a story about the impact of the cost-of-living crisis. His whereabouts were unknown for over 10 hours, after which the police confirmed he was in custody and had been charged under the draconian Digital Security Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International rallied support, issuing an urgent action demanding his release. On 3 April, Shams was granted bail and released from prison \u2013 a ground-breaking move, as most prisoners are subject to a lengthy pre-trial detention. Amnesty International has been campaigning against the Digital Security Act, publishing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/asa13\/4294\/2021\/en\/\">research<\/a>&nbsp;about the way it has been weaponized by the authorities. The organization will continue to campaign for the charges against Shams to be dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pakistan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following an unlawful raid on her house, Mahal Baloch from Pakistan was detained together with her young children and other family members in February. After her family was released, Mahal remained held without charge until her release on bail in May. The policed alleged Mahal was part of an armed separatist group, who had previously carried out suicide bombings, and that she had provided a confession. She was granted bail three months after her arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty-six people peacefully showing their support for the former president\u2019s political party, were sentenced in March to two years in prison for \u201cdisturbing public order\u201d. Amnesty International publicly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/fr\/latest\/news\/2023\/03\/cote-divoire-amnesty-international-exige-la-liberation-immediate-des-militants-du-ppa-ci-arbitrairement-detenus\/\">reacted<\/a>&nbsp;to the detentions and called on authorities to ensure fair judicial proceedings for the protestors \u2013 the campaign caused a ripple effect across C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s traditional and social media. On 22 March, the activists were given a four-month suspended sentence and released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EU<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International advocates for more European Union (EU) support for human rights defenders worldwide as part of the block\u2019s external relations. This year the EU is providing an additional \u20ac30 million to the EU Human Rights Defenders Mechanism which plays an important role in assisting at risk human rights defenders and their family members. This decision proves human rights do matter in sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chile<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 24 February, a court in Chile&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/amr22\/6492\/2023\/en\/\">reopened the investigation<\/a>&nbsp;into human rights violations against Mois\u00e9s \u00d3rdenes, who was attacked by a group of Carabineros officers while peacefully demonstrating in October 2019. Last December, a public prosecutor had closed the investigation into seven of the 13 officers charged with the attack, but Moises\u2019 family and lawyers felt the investigation had been far from exhaustive. Thanks to calls from Amnesty International, those seven officers will now face investigation once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Global<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Amnesty International, the pursuit of international justice for crimes committed in conflict is an organizational priority. This is the first time that the Commission has made a referral decision against any country for breaching the Directive which guarantees equality and non-discrimination irrespective of race or ethnic origin across a range of socio-economic goods and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International, along with the European Roma Rights Centre, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/eur72\/5640\/2017\/en\/\">researched<\/a>&nbsp;and campaigned on the issue of segregated education in the country for a number of years, and this is a big win for the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Argentina<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After taking a wrong turn in 2020, teenager&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amnistia.org.ar\/fuerte-mensaje-de-la-justicia-de-cordoba-el-caso-de-blas-correas-fue-un-acto-de-violencia-institucional-y-la-policia-debe-capacitarse-de-modo-urgente\/\">Blas Correas, from Cordoba, Argentina,<\/a>&nbsp;was shot dead by police. Amnesty International has been supporting Blas\u2019 family for the past three years to ensure justice is served. Following the trial earlier this year, two&nbsp;police officers were sentenced to life imprisonment. As a human rights organization, Amnesty is relieved to see the happiness this brings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following pressure from Amnesty International, Quebec, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Saskatchewan joined British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Alberta, and Manitoba on the list of Canadian provinces that have ended their contracts with the federal government to detain migrants in provincial jails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decisions taken by these four provinces are encouraging steps towards putting an end to a harmful system. The law now recognizes that all sex without consent is rape. In close collaboration with activists and gender rights campaigners, Amnesty International&nbsp; worked tirelessly to support this legislative change. It\u2019s a crucial win for all survivors of sexual violence in Switzerland and an important step along the road to combating widespread sexual violence in Switzerland and improving access to justice for survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Iran<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty\u2019s research, campaigning and advocacy work continues to have a positive impact on the lives of women rights activists imprisoned in Iran. In February, Yasaman Aryani and Monireh Arabshahi were released from prison after serving four years of their 16-year sentence. Amnesty International wrote to authorities, calling for their immediate release and highlighting the State\u2019s obligation to protect the right to health and freedom of these women.
