{"id":2331,"date":"2023-03-30T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-30T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/thailand-15-year-old-girl-held-in-pre-trial-detention-for-lese-majeste\/"},"modified":"2024-11-11T15:19:49","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T08:19:49","slug":"thailand-15-year-old-girl-held-in-pre-trial-detention-for-lese-majeste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/blog\/2023\/03\/thailand-15-year-old-girl-held-in-pre-trial-detention-for-lese-majeste\/","title":{"rendered":"Thailand: 15-year-old girl held in pre-trial detention for l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Responding to the pre-trial detention of a 15-year-old girl in Bangkok accused of violating the l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9 law after her participation in a peaceful protest, Amnesty International\u2019s Thailand Researcher&nbsp;<strong>Chanatip Tatiyakaroonwong<\/strong>&nbsp;said:<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote is-lined\"><p><span><em><span style=\"font-size: medium\">\u201cThis development is yet another unsettling reminder that Thai authorities continue to target children as they use the law on l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9 to suppress peaceful dissent. In addition, March alone saw convictions of at least four protesters as well as several new charges and indictments under this law.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-background\">Background:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yok (whose full name is being withheld for security reasons), the 15-year-old activist put in pre-trial detention this week, joined a peaceful protest on 14 October 2022 where she called for the removal of the l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9 law. Authorities issued an arrest warrant for her on 28 February 2023 and detained her at the Baan Pranee Children and Juvenile Training Centre for Girls in Nakhon Pathom Province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yok\u2019s case is not an isolated incident. On 7 March 2023, the Criminal Court in Bangkok sentenced a man to three years\u2019 imprisonment for selling calendars via a Facebook page which the authorities deemed to be in violation of the l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9 law. The calendar featured cartoon illustrations of a yellow duck, a symbol of Thailand\u2019s protest movement. In a separate case, on 13 March 2023, the Chiang Mai Provincial Court found an Indigenous Karen man guilty of l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9, sedition, and the violation of the Computer Crimes Act for posting criticism of the monarchy on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since nationwide mass demonstrations broke out in Thailand in 2020, at least 1,895 individuals have been subject to a variety of criminal charges for their involvement in protests, according to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights. Among these individuals, at least 237 people have been charged with l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9, including 18 children, as of 27 March 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International\u2019s recent report&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/asa39\/6336\/2023\/en\/\">\u201cWe Are Reclaiming Our Future\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;documented how children in Thailand faced a wide range of severe repercussions for taking part in mass demonstrations, including the criminalization of their activities, intimidation and surveillance by the authorities, and violent protest crackdowns by police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report called for the Thai authorities to drop all charges against peaceful child protesters, end all forms of intimidation and surveillance, and amend laws used to curb children\u2019s right to protest to ensure they are in line with international human rights law and standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u0e40\u0e23\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19\u0e23\u0e39\u0e49\u0e40\u0e1e\u0e34\u0e48\u0e21\u0e40\u0e15\u0e34\u0e21\u0e40\u0e01\u0e35\u0e48\u0e22\u0e27\u0e01\u0e31\u0e1a\u0e41\u0e2d\u0e21\u0e40\u0e19\u0e2a\u0e15\u0e35\u0e49<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u0e1a\u0e23\u0e34\u0e08\u0e32\u0e04\u0e2a\u0e19\u0e31\u0e1a\u0e2a\u0e19\u0e38\u0e19\u0e41\u0e2d\u0e21\u0e40\u0e19\u0e2a\u0e15\u0e35\u0e49<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Responding to the pre-trial detention of a 15-year-old girl in Bangkok accused of violating the l\u00e8se-majest\u00e9 law after her participation in a peaceful protest, Amnesty International\u2019s Thailand Researcher&nbsp;Chanatip Tatiyakaroonwong&nbsp;said: &nbsp;
