{"id":2090,"date":"2021-02-09T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/myanmar-several-injured-as-security-forces-violently-quash-peaceful-protests\/"},"modified":"2024-11-11T12:17:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-11T05:17:46","slug":"myanmar-several-injured-as-security-forces-violently-quash-peaceful-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/news\/2021\/02\/myanmar-several-injured-as-security-forces-violently-quash-peaceful-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar: Several injured as security forces violently quash peaceful protests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Responding to&nbsp;credible&nbsp;reports&nbsp;of&nbsp;a&nbsp;widespread&nbsp;mobile&nbsp;internet blackout&nbsp;underway&nbsp;in Myanmar, Amnesty International\u2019s Deputy Regional Director for Campaigns, Ming Yu Hah, said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo shut down the internet amid a volatile coup, a humanitarian crisis and a&nbsp;health&nbsp;pandemic&nbsp;is&nbsp;a&nbsp;heinous and&nbsp;reckless&nbsp;decision.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote is-lined\"><p><strong style=\"font-weight: 400;font-family: amnestytradegothicbold, dindanmaibold, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">To shut down the internet amid a volatile coup, a humanitarian crisis and a health pandemic is a heinous and reckless decision.&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince the 1 February coup, people in Myanmar have been forced into a situation of abject uncertainty. An&nbsp;expanded&nbsp;internet shutdown will put them at&nbsp;greater&nbsp;risk of more egregious human rights violations at the hands of the military.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe military must re-establish all&nbsp;telecommunications&nbsp;immediately&nbsp;and stop putting people\u2019s&nbsp;rights&nbsp;in danger.&nbsp;All mobile operators and telecommunications providers in Myanmar must&nbsp;seek urgent clarification from the Myanmar authorities.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 6 February,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Myanmar military&nbsp;reportedly&nbsp;ordered telecommunications companies in the country to&nbsp;fully&nbsp;shut down&nbsp;internet&nbsp;and 4G services. According to information received by Amnesty International, the effective blackout will be in operation until Monday 8 February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An earlier&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-myanmar-politics\/myanmar-junta-extends-social-media-blockade-as-protests-spread-idUSKBN2A52DE\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">order<\/a>,&nbsp;on&nbsp;5&nbsp;February,&nbsp;instructed telecommunications companies to block access to Twitter and Instagram.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>On 4 February, the military&nbsp;had already&nbsp;announced that they were ordering telecoms operators to block access to Facebook until 7 February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the 1 February military coup was underway, internet and phone outages were reported in several parts of the country, including in the capital, Nay&nbsp;Pyi&nbsp;Taw, the largest city, Yangon, as well as Shan and Kachin States and the Mandalay and&nbsp;Sagaing&nbsp;regions.&nbsp;Access was later reestablished.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have&nbsp;also&nbsp;been mobile internet restrictions in conflict-affected areas of Rakhine and Chin States in the country for more than a year. 4G internet access in those areas was reportedly restored late in the evening on 2 February 2021.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such restrictions pose a real danger to at-risk civilian populations, especially when access to information is so vital during the&nbsp;COVID-19&nbsp;pandemic \u2013 and even more so when the situation on the ground is so tense amid the coup, and in conflict-affected areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, business enterprises have a responsibility to respect human rights independent of state actions or obligations, and over and above compliance with national laws.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u0e40\u0e23\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19\u0e23\u0e39\u0e49\u0e40\u0e1e\u0e34\u0e48\u0e21\u0e40\u0e15\u0e34\u0e21\u0e40\u0e01\u0e35\u0e48\u0e22\u0e27\u0e01\u0e31\u0e1a\u0e41\u0e2d\u0e21\u0e40\u0e19\u0e2a\u0e15\u0e35\u0e49<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u0e1a\u0e23\u0e34\u0e08\u0e32\u0e04\u0e2a\u0e19\u0e31\u0e1a\u0e2a\u0e19\u0e38\u0e19\u0e41\u0e2d\u0e21\u0e40\u0e19\u0e2a\u0e15\u0e35\u0e49<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Responding to&nbsp;credible&nbsp;reports&nbsp;of&nbsp;a&nbsp;widespread&nbsp;mobile&nbsp;internet blackout&nbsp;underway&nbsp;in Myanmar, Amnesty International\u2019s Deputy Regional Director for Campaigns, Ming Yu Hah, said:&nbsp; \u201cTo shut down the internet amid a volatile coup, a humanitarian crisis and a&nbsp;health&nbsp;pandemic&nbsp;is&nbsp;a&nbsp;heinous and&nbsp;reckless&nbsp;decision.&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cSince the 1 February coup, people in Myanmar have been forced into a situation of abject uncertainty.
