{"id":1959,"date":"2019-12-12T15:58:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T08:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/write-for-rights-amnesty-international-launches-global-campaign-championing-youth-activists\/"},"modified":"2024-11-04T17:28:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T10:28:01","slug":"write-for-rights-amnesty-international-launches-global-campaign-championing-youth-activists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/news\/2019\/12\/write-for-rights-amnesty-international-launches-global-campaign-championing-youth-activists\/","title":{"rendered":"Write for Rights: Amnesty International launches global campaign championing youth activists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Amnesty International has today launched&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/writeforrights\">Write for Rights<\/a>, the world\u2019s biggest human rights campaign, which this year champions children\u2019s rights and youth activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year Write for Rights, Amnesty\u2019s flagship human rights campaign, champions youth activists who are taking on the world\u2019s biggest crises,\u201d said Piyanut Kotsan, Director of Amnesty International Thaialnd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom those campaigning for climate and environmental justice, to those challenging inequality, poverty, discrimination and political repression, young people have emerged as a powerful force for change who deserve the world\u2019s support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every December people around the world write millions of letters, emails, tweets, Facebook posts and postcards for those whose human rights are under attack, in what has become the world\u2019s biggest human rights event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International is hoping to break last year\u2019s Write for Rights record of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/campaigns\/2019\/10\/nearly-6-million-messages-of-support-for-women-activists-around-the-world\/\">nearly six million messages of support<\/a>&nbsp;for activists and individuals from 10 countries whose human rights are under attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Youth activism in the spotlight<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From those campaigning for climate and environmental justice, to those challenging inequality, poverty, discrimination and political repression, young people have emerged as a powerful force for change who deserve the world\u2019s support&nbsp;Kumi Naidoo, Secretary General of Amnesty International<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Youth activists have played a prominent role in major protest movements and human rights campaigns during 2019, such as the Fridays for Future climate strike movement founded by 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, as well as protest movements in many countries around the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/writeforrights\">Write for Rights 2019<\/a>&nbsp;features youth human rights defenders and individuals&nbsp;<s>from<\/s>&nbsp;in Belarus, Canada, China, Egypt, Greece, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Philippines and South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launching two days ahead of Universal Children\u2019s Day on 20 November, a day to promote children\u2019s rights, several of the featured activists had their rights violated as children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They include&nbsp;<strong>Jos\u00e9 Adri\u00e1n,<\/strong>&nbsp;who was 14 when he was brutally beaten by police on his way home from school in Mexico. He is now demanding reparations for his treatment and for the police to stop arbitrary detentions in the state of Yucat\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the other cases are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grassy Narrows Youth<\/strong>, a group of youth activists from an Indigenous community in north-western Ontario who have suffered one of Canada\u2019s worst health crises. Their community has been devastated by 50 years of mercury contamination of their fish and river system. The Grassy Narrows youth are urging the government to address the mercury crisis once and for all, including by providing specialized health care and compensation for all;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sarah Mardini\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Se\u00e1n Binder,\u00a0<\/strong>two volunteer rescue workers\u00a0<s>from<\/s>\u00a0in Lesvos, Greece, who face up to 25 years in prison for their humanitarian work helping spot refugee boats in distress;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Yasaman Aryani<\/strong>, who defied her country\u2019s discriminatory forced veiling laws and now must serve 10 years behind bars. Amnesty is campaigning for her immediate release;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Marinel Ubaldo,\u00a0<\/strong>a youth activist from the Philippines who is urging her government to declare a climate emergency and protect future generations from the devastating impacts of climate change after her home was destroyed by typhoon Haiyan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Write for Rights campaign epitomizes the ideals that Amnesty International was founded on \u2013 it\u2019s about individuals helping other individuals. We are urging people to get behind these incredible young people who are campaigning for justice, equality and freedom,\u201d said Piyanut Kotsan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we know from our work over the past five decades, writing letters works. Not only can it help free prisoners of conscience, but it makes a huge emotional difference to the people we support and to their loved ones.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monica Ben\u00edcio, the partner of Marielle Franco, a local politician in Brazil who was killed last year and was featured as part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/campaigns\/2019\/10\/nearly-6-million-messages-of-support-for-women-activists-around-the-world\/\">last Write for Rights<\/a>, said of the campaign:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt helps me to get up in the morning and see some meaning, knowing that there is this big global network of affection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll these demonstrations of love and affection are helping us to mobilize, to demand justice, to pressure for investigation and above all to fight so that there will be no more Marielles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a
