{"id":1769,"date":"2018-06-01T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/thailand-activists-appeal-result-is-a-victory-for-justice\/"},"modified":"2024-09-23T16:27:07","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T09:27:07","slug":"thailand-activists-appeal-result-is-a-victory-for-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/news\/2018\/06\/thailand-activists-appeal-result-is-a-victory-for-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Thailand: Activist\u2019s appeal result is a victory for justice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Photo: BenarNews<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reacting to the Bangkok South Criminal Court\u2019s decision to overturn its conviction of Andy Hall, a British migrant rights worker found guilty of criminal defamation in September 2016 for his work on a report into the abuse of migrant workers\u2019 rights in Thailand,&nbsp;<strong>Katherine Gerson<\/strong>, Amnesty International\u2019s Campaigner on Thailand, said:<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote is-lined\"><p><span><strong style=\"font-weight: 400;font-family: amnestytradegothicbold, dindanmaibold, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">\u201cThis successful appeal is very welcome, and it underlines how the original conviction against Andy Hall was an abuse of justice that should never have been allowed.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Hall was found guilty by the Bangkok South Criminal Court in 2016 for criminal defamation charges brought against him by the Natural Fruit Company Ltd. The company was the subject of a 2013 report that Andy Hall worked on for the civil society group Finnwatch while researching abuses of migrant workers\u2019 rights in Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Hall was fined 150 000 Baht and received a three-year sentence.
