{"id":1683,"date":"2016-06-21T09:51:00","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T02:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/withdraw-charges-against-human-rights-defenders\/"},"modified":"2024-09-20T17:08:11","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T10:08:11","slug":"withdraw-charges-against-human-rights-defenders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/en\/news\/2016\/06\/withdraw-charges-against-human-rights-defenders\/","title":{"rendered":"Withdraw charges against human rights defenders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Thai authorities must reverse their decision to charge three prominent human rights defenders with criminal defamation and computer crimes for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.or.th\/index.php\/download_file\/view\/659\/760\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;documenting and publishing details of human rights violations in the country<\/a>, Amnesty International said today.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote is-lined\"><p><span style=\"font-size: large\">\u201cInstead of using broad and vague laws to target human rights defenders, the Thai authorities should be following up on the reports of alleged torture and other ill-treatment, with a view to holding those responsible accountable,\u201d<br><span>said Audrey Gaughran, Amnesty International\u2019s Director of Global Issues.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p>The three well-known Thai activists, Somchai Homla-or, Pornpen Khongkhachonkiet, and Anchana Heemmima, have all been summoned to appear at Pattani Police station on 26 July 2016, to face charges of criminal defamation and violating the Computer Crimes Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move by the Thai authorities comes after the three activists\u2019 organization, the Cross Cultural Foundation and Duay Jai, published a report that raises serious allegations of torture against the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 \u2013 an army unit that operates in Thailand\u2019s Southern Border Provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever since the report was published, in February 2016, Somchai, Pornpen and Anchana have faced official harassment, including pressure to reveal the sources of their information and even the identity of the victims of alleged torture.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote is-lined\"><p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span>\u201cThe three accused are highly respected human rights defenders. The charges brought against them represent an escalation of the Thai authorities\u2019 assault on the rights to freedom of expression and freedom of information.
