Press release on Human Rights Media Awards 2021

On February 24, 2022, Amnesty International Thailand announced the winners and hosted a ceremony to confer “Human Rights Media Awards 2021” at Lunar Room, 10th floor, AVANI Riverside Bangkok.

The awards are divided into outstanding media on human rights in the category of printing, online news and feature stories, broadcast news and feature stories, news and feature stories via TV shows, news and feature stories via online video clips, and photos titled “Life amidst Covid-19 crisis through human rights lens” for youth and general public.

Ms. Thitirat Thipsamritkul, Chair of AIT’s Board of Directors, reveals that media functions like the “candlelight” which illuminates human rights issues to become more visible in our society and invite us to nurture mutual respect. It is therefore important to give moral support to media who have been working hard to disseminate news to nurture respect, promote and protect human rights. 

Hence, the Media for Human Rights Award Ceremony is being organized to raise social awareness on the significant role of media as a frontline leading the discussion of human rights issues and to show solidarity with the media so that they stand strong in their fight to uphold and promote human rights. Amnesty International Thailand has been calling on all sectors to respect the role of media and to ensure they receive protection and are free from intimidation and harassment. 

The Chair of AIT’s Board of Directors further said that the award jury for the Human Rights Media Awards 2021 is composed of experts from mass media and human rights. They have made their decisions on the awardees as follows;

 

Outstanding media in the category of news and feature stories including one award; 

  • Title “People Living in the Forest?:Bangkloy Karen’s farewell and Journey to Return Home” from Sarakadee Magazine

 

Honorable mention in the category of online news and feature stories including one award; 

  • Title “Path to Why Torture-Enforced Disappearances Bill Matters” from Daily News

 

Outstanding media in the category of online news and feature stories including one award; 

  • Title “What Happened to Wanchalearm?” from Prachatai

 

Honorable mention in the category of online news and feature stories including four awards; 

  • Title “Children’s Fate, Mother’s heart: 112 and the Down of the Family” from The 101.World

  • Title “WE NEVER KNOW WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS:’ COVID STRANDS THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES IN THAILAND” from Khaosod English

  • Title “Commoners of Din Dang Battlefield: Vengeance, Anger, Talugaz” from Voice TV

  • Title “The Lost of Winner: Klity Village After the Final Judgment, When the River Is Still Tainted” from WAY Magazine

 

Outstanding media in the category of broadcast news and feature stories (not longer than 20 minutes) including, one award; 

  • Episode “Vaccine to Enhance the Immunity of Citizens” fromWorkpoint TV

 

Honorable mention in the category of broadcast news and feature stories (not longer than 20 minutes) including, one award; 

  • Episode “The Effects of Karen Asylum Seekers by Thailand-Myanmar Border in Mae Hong Son” from PPTV HD 36

 

Outstanding media in the category of news and feature stories via TV show (not longer than 60 minutes) including, one award; 

  • Episode “Hidden world in Yaowarat”  Kon Jon Mueng, Thai PBS

 

Honorable mention in the category of news and feature stories via TV show (not longer than 60 minutes) including, three awards; 

  • Episode “Welfare (not) for every child” San Tang Ton, PPTV HD 36

  • Episode “Escape from Death” Perd Pom, Thai PBS

  • Episode “Mani-Jahai: Life at Risk” Perd Pom, Thai PBS

 

Honorable mention in the category of news and feature stories via online clip video, five awards including; 

  • Title “Red’s Scar” from Prachatai

  • Title “Uncle Don Katepuek: Journalist - Citizen - Democracy | Life Dedicated to be Citizen Journalist” from URBAN CREATURE

  • Title “Children with Charges: How Does Children’s Rights Go Under Political Prosecutions” WorkpointTODAY

Ms. Thitirat Thipsamritkul further states that this year’s event also included a “Voice of Rights Talk” on “From Klity, Bangkloy to Chana: How Media Matters When People Fight for Their Home” by Thanakrit Thongfa, a Representative from Clity, Khairiyah Rahmanyah, the Daughter of Chana, Pongsak Tonnamethch, a Representative from Bang Kloi Village.

In closing, Ms. Piyanut Kotsan - Director of Amnesty International Thailand thanked the media who are the most important persons in today’s event for helping to mobilize and function as a medium to support the struggle to protect human rights and to engender correct understanding in the public until now and in the future.
