UN Holds Hands with the Civil Society in Live Broadcasting Thai ICCPR Review

14 March 2017

UNOHCHR and the civil society network held a live broadcast for International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Review raising the awareness of civil rights and political rights.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights of United Nations (UNOHCHR) in association with the Thai civil society and civil rights network including Amnesty International broadcast the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Review (ICCPR) live, which Thailand is one of the 169 member countries. Thailand was to be reviewed by the UN Human Rights Commission during 13-14 March 2017 in Geneva, Switzerland.

In this review, the civil society organizations including Amnesty submitted a parallel report and questions to the Human Rights Commission in advance for the consideration in conjunction with the Thai government report. The main issues in question that the Commission raised for Thailand cover several issues such as enforcement of the order of National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), civil litigation in court, draft of the new constitution, migrant workers, sexual equality, domestic violence, torture and kidnapping, human trafficking, freedom of expression, freedom of peaceful assembly, etc.

The live broadcast aimed to raise the awareness of civil rights and political rights in the Thai society. After it concluded, the Human Rights Commission would pass the solution at the end of March so that it could be adopted in Thailand.
